Classic Austrian pub - Salm Bräu

Right next to the lower exit from the Belvedere Park is probably the best beer restaurant in Vienna - Salm Bräu. The local beer is really impressive, especially since most of the varieties on offer are produced here, at our own brewery. Salm Bräu also has its own distillery - its signature pear schnapps, Salm whiskey and berry tinctures are known far beyond Vienna.

Drinks are served with crispy and juicy pork ribs, knuckle, salads, soups, schnitzels - the menu in the restaurant is truly huge, as, indeed, the portions themselves. The interior, made in a traditional and laconic rustic style, deserves special praise. In many ways, it is he who creates the very unique and organic atmosphere of an Austrian pub in the restaurant.

The most famous Viennese coffee house - Central

Paraphrasing the proud aphorism of Coco Chanel, we can confidently say: “There are many cafes and confectioneries, the Central coffee house is one.” The most famous and unusual cafe in Vienna is famous for the fact that since its opening back in 1876 it has become a favorite meeting place for artists and writers, artists and politicians. At different times, Sigmund Freud, Adolf Hitler, Peter Altenberg, Stefan Zweig, Alfred Polgar, Leon Trotsky and other historical figures drank coffee here.

Vienna is amazing beautiful city! Monuments, park ensembles, palaces, churches, theaters and museums… The architecture is impressive! Vienna is very similar in this to the beloved St. Petersburg. Fall in love with this city from the first minute!

Vienna is not only a city of arts: waltz, music and baroque, but strudel, schnitzel and delicious coffee. This is a paradise for lovers of delicious food: numerous cafes and restaurants is an integral part of the city. We honestly tried everything and offer you must-sees - the best establishments Vienna!

1. Cafe Sacher

This is where you can try original cake Sacher is one of the most famous desserts in the world. The cake was first made by Franz Sacher in 1832, a 16-year-old apprentice of the chief confectioner. The confectioner fell ill and Franz had to make his own dessert for the Austrian Foreign Minister. Chocolate lovers will appreciate this dessert.

The cafe is very easy to find: it is located just behind the Vienna Opera, in the Sacher Hotel. It is better to come early in the morning when there are not so many tourists yet.

Tip: As a souvenir, buy an original Sacher cake at the airport before your flight, packed in a beautiful wooden box. Believe me, family will be more than happy with such a gift than a magnet.

2. Restaurant "Plachutta"

This is one of the best restaurants in Vienna, so it's worth booking a table in advance. The restaurant specializes in beef, sourced exclusively from Viennese farmers.
Here, it is best to try a certain dish: Tafelspitz(Tafelschpitz) - the tender top of a beef rump, boiled with soup greens. Served with broth, applesauce with horseradish, bread and a side dish of your choice. It is better to order for two, it is impossible to eat alone. Believe me, it's very tasty!

3. Restaurant-bar "Das Loft"

This is a bar restaurant With panoramic view. Located on the 18th floor of the luxurious Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom. From the windows of the restaurant and lounge bar "Das LOFT" offers a breathtaking view of the city. Here you can eat deliciously, but also admire the amazing panorama of Vienna.

Walking along the Unter Dunaistrasse in the evening, the restaurant is hard to miss: its ceiling is decorated with colorful luminous frescoes that create the effect of a moving space. The restaurant is quite expensive and offers gourmet cuisine. I advise you to book a table at the bar and enjoy the view of the evening city while drinking a cocktail.

4. Cafe Havelka

Any guide book will recommend this cafe to you, and for good reason. It was opened in 1939 by Leopold Havelka and his wife Josefina. Until 2011, the founder personally met his regular customers. Leopold died at the age of 100, now his son Günther runs the coffee shop.

In the 1950s, the coffee house was a meeting place for Viennese bohemians. The coffee shop is small, dark, but very cozy. Here you should definitely try coffee "melange" and branded Einspenner with the addition of powdered sugar (black coffee with whipped cream, "Viennese coffee").

In this article, I have collected my recommendations for restaurants in Vienna, dividing all establishments for your convenience into classic, trendy, places with a relaxed atmosphere and those located in the vicinity of the city's most popular market, the Naschmarkt. And, you know, it was not in this blog restaurant guide longer than Viennese.

Viennese timeless classic

The first place everyone who comes to Vienna should go to is Plachutta. Vienna is Tafelspitz, Tafelspitz is Plachutta, it's simple. Do not even try to try it in other places, nowhere does it cook like here! This classic Viennese restaurant with white tablecloths is adored by the Viennese themselves, and it is mentioned very often in guidebooks, so it is worth booking a table in advance. If you are not a big fan of going to restaurants, or if you are just on a budget and choose one place to get acquainted with Viennese cuisine, then let it be Plachutta. Order one Tafelspitz for two and a glass of wine or beer and you will get an idea of how and what people eat in Vienna. The establishment is a chain one, but don't let that bother you - Plachutta doesn't get worse from branch to branch. It's nice that Plachutta is open on Sunday, which is not the case with all Viennese restaurants.

Most old restaurant Vienna, which Beethoven also visited - right here, in the courtyard, under a linden tree, was his favorite place. Pfarrwirt is located outside the center, in the green 19th district, and is a classic restaurant with white tablecloths, where the atmosphere and visitors have not changed for perhaps fifty years. The seasonal menu (from wild garlic and asparagus to crayfish and mushrooms), the iconic dishes of the Austro-Hungarian cuisine and wine from the surrounding hills - I dedicated to the restaurant and the area.

Vestibul is the favorite restaurant of Austrian politicians in the south wing of the Burgtheater, located where the carriage entrance used to be during the empire. Marble columns and arches remained from earlier times; in summer, the restaurant is complemented by a terrace overlooking the lively Ring. The restaurant is open at lunchtime and in the evening, closed on Sunday; the lunch menu changes daily (33 euros for 3 courses), the evening one costs 55 euros. The main dish on the menu, Chef Kristian Domshitz's signature number is lobster with cabbage in cream sauce with paprika. Respectable and Viennese.

The fact that the best Viennese schnitzel is served in the Figlmueller establishment has probably not been heard of, only a few of the tourists going to Vienna. If you, like me, are intimidated by the halo of almost the most popular restaurant in Vienna, and you want to try the legendary schnitzel, pay attention to Lugeck Figlmueller, a modern and bright restaurant opened by the same Figlmueller family in the very very center of the city, opposite the historic tavern. The restaurant occupies a premise on the ground floor of a beautiful two-tower building, in summer there is a terrace in front of it. Compared to a classic restaurant, the cuisine at Lugeck has become lighter, the portions are slightly smaller, but the core is still Viennese classics. Open every day from 11.30.

Zum Schwarzen Kameel is a Viennese institution, a restaurant that has been operating in its modern form since 1901 and retains a wonderful interior of the beginning of the last century with original lamps and wooden panels on the walls. In 1618, this building was purchased by Johann Baptist Kamel and opened a colonial shop here, calling it "At the Black Kamel". The similarity of the surname with German camel made the camel a symbol of the institution. It is located in the very very center, not far from my favorite Fabios. There are two halls here - in the first, more like a bar, you can drink a glass of wine and have a bite, standing at high tables shoulder to shoulder with crowns, the second is a restaurant with white tablecloths and waiters in bow ties; kitchen - with elements of a modern molecular approach. The restaurant is proud of its wine cellar with over 800 bottles. Open from 8 am to midnight every day.

Cafe Prueckel has been operating in Vienna for more than a hundred years - it opened in 1904. It is located on the Ring, a ring of boulevards encircling the historic center of the city; in the middle of the century the cafe was rebuilt and since then has retained a laconic interior in the style of the fifties. I like Prueckel for its spaciousness and huge windows, thanks to which the room looks filled with air, this is a place where you can spend as much time as you want with a cup of coffee. No one will look at you askance, glance at your watch, offer to repeat the order, everyone here is used to the fact that guests can read newspapers, work, and communicate without time limits. The cafe is open from 8.30 to 22. Three times a week in the evenings there is live music. The menu is quite extensive - it includes many varieties of coffee, several breakfast options, toasts and salads, traditional Viennese dishes like schnitzel, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Muscovites, as well as those who visit Zurich and Florence, are familiar with this Tuscan place. In Vienna, it remains an island of stability in the touristy surroundings of St. Stephen's Cathedral, offering quality Italian food. In summer, tables are taken out of the frescoed halls into the street, to the very epicenter of Viennese life. Florentine steaks, wild boar gnocchi, rich Tuscan tomato-bread soup are offered to be accompanied, of course, with wines of the Antinori family. In season, the best place in Vienna to try truffle dishes.

Le Ciel is a slightly old-fashioned French restaurant located on the top floor of the classic Viennese Grand Hotel Wien. It is easy to meet women in evening dresses and their suitors here, this is the right place for a long thoughtful dinner in a serious company. The chef, Tony Mohrwald, joined the team in 2015 and received the first star for the restaurant, in 2016 the status of Le Ciel was confirmed again. The beauty of the establishment is not only in the confident work with French cuisine, but also in the panoramic terrace, open during the warm season. Le Ciel has two menus - a shorter one for lunch (3 courses - 45 euros), a longer one - evening (3 courses - 76 euros, 6 courses - 106). The restaurant is proud of its wine list and the wine pairs offered to guests, including the most famous Austrian and international positions.

An iconic sandwich shop with a dusty dark interior lurks in an alley near the busy Graben Street in the first arrondissement. Opened already in 1902 by a chef from Krakow, the cafe successfully survived the difficult 20th century and acquired several branches by the beginning of the 21st century. Nothing is cooked here except sandwiches on local black bread with various fillings - from eggs and cucumbers to pate and fish. There are no seats here, it is supposed that you will order a couple of sandwiches from an unsmiling Frau in a cap behind the counter, take a sip of beer, have a snack and you will be like that. They say this is exactly what Franz Kafka did, who lived a couple of floors above.

For contemporary Italian cuisine in Vienna, head to Fabios, an establishment prized by local bankers and the Michelin Guide. A very stylish restaurant, an incredibly stylish audience (I like to watch people almost more than I do!), A terrace is open in the summer, and moreover, in the very center of the city, a couple of steps from Graben Street. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Risotto with parmesan crust I remember for several years! The menu changes, so it's no longer possible to try it. The restaurant is closed on Sunday. You need to book in advance.

The owner of the restaurant, Joji Hattori, was born in Japan and moved to Vienna at a young age to study at the Vienna University of Music. Hattori is known as a violinist and conductor, and now, after a 20-year musical career, also as a restaurateur - he owns one of the best Japanese restaurants in Vienna, Shiki. A word has been chosen for the name that means in Japanese 4 seasons and conductor simultaneously. The restaurant chef worked for a long time with the famous Japanese chef Takumi Murase in Tokyo, in Vienna he managed to check in on the kitchen of Tony Morwald and Christian Domshits. People come to Shiki as a bar (there is a good cocktail menu and a selection of wines by the glass), as a bistro (they serve a Wagyu beef burger and bento lunches during the day) and as a restaurant - in the evening menu, fish (from trout to turbot), sushi, duck. There is a separate vegan menu. Open every day, except Sunday, from 12 to 24.

If you want the best view in Vienna, come to Das Loft. The restaurant is located on the 17th floor of the Sofitel Stephansdom, designed by Jean Nouvel, and offers stunning views of the city through giant panoramic windows. It all starts with a breakfast that you can come to even if you don't live in the hotel (although it's worth it to stay there) - for 32 euros you get access to an extensive buffet. During the day there is a separate menu - for the same 32 euros you can choose 4 dishes, for example, beef tartar with oysters, ravioli with lobster bisque or cod with beans and pears. In the evening, it is worth arriving early in order to have time to admire the Viennese panorama until the sun sets. The menu is the same as for lunch, but the portions are larger and the prices are higher. On weekends, brunches are held here - for 69 euros you can eat until you run out of strength.

In the center of Vienna, you have to be especially careful with the choice of restaurants - where there are a lot of tourists, there is a lot of nonsense unworthy of a visit. Do&Co is the right place. It is located in the building of the main, perhaps, Vienna Museum, Albertina (Schile, Kokoschka, Klimt - this is here), it is open from morning until evening. In summer, you can have breakfast while waiting for the art halls to open, under the linden trees. In addition, you can drop by Do&Co during the day for coffee, go for sushi or a full meal. Universal restaurant.

The building that houses The Bank Brasserie was once the headquarters of the main bank of Austria-Hungary, and now houses the Park Hyatt hotel, which retains Art Deco elements. The brasserie is open all day. Breakfast meets the needs of the hotel's international audience and includes truffle omelettes and spelled porridge (buffet - 35 euros), lunch does not cost more than 26 euros for 3 courses, including ravioli with mascarpone and guinea fowl with Romanesco cabbage, dinner is served a la carte and includes choice raw fish and seafood, wagyu beef and Austrian lake fish.

Light, modern and much more creative than Fabios, the Xpedit restaurant offers a variant of Italian (or rather, Ligurian) cuisine. I really love places like this: inexpensive, with slightly shabby furniture and long tables, with an open kitchen and an informal approach to communication by waiters. It is worth coming here for lunch, when it is quite quiet here, or in the evening, when the audience, on the contrary, is practically on their ears. The last time I ate sweet rhubarb risotto here, and surprisingly, it didn't taste like rice porridge at all. You can come to dinner without a reservation, if you are going to come in the evening, it is better to call anyway.

For a quick lunch or glass of wine with pannini, there's nothing better than Wein&Co. This is a chain of liquor stores that operate wine cellars. I love the place closer to Stephansplatz, right next to COS. There is fast service, delicious beef tartare, a decent selection of Austrian wine both by the glass and in the bottle. Any bottle purchased in the store can be drunk right there with a minimum margin. Reservation is not needed.

The son of an Austrian mother and a Greek father, Chef Constantin Philippou has dedicated his life to combining Austrian culinary solidity with Mediterranean lightness, becoming Gault Millau's Austrian Chef of the Year in 2106. It is most convenient to evaluate what Phillip did in his bistro O boufes, because, in my opinion, the chef succeeded better than the star restaurant named after him, devoid of lightness in cuisine and serving. Firstly, the prices here are very moderate - lunch does not cost more than 19 euros; secondly, there is a vegetarian menu (in Vienna, as elsewhere in the world, food without meat is a noticeable trend); thirdly, there is a stylish and slightly shabby interior, reminding us that Vienna is alive not only with grand restaurants and places for those who are far beyond.

This restaurant is also located in the very center, in the Stock Exchange building, on the ground floor, and shares a room with a pretty shop selling flowers, vases and all sorts of garden things. A little strange, but charming location! Here they serve breakfast (from traditional yogurt to a signature morning egg burger), lunch and dinner, where homemade gnocchi with lemon sauce side by side with stewed lamb served with Jerusalem artichoke. Open non-stop, closed on Sunday. Great place for a light informal lunch.

Liebsteinsky is a lively place on the Ring with panoramic windows through which you can watch Viennese life, the style is something between a French bistro and a trendy New York bar. The basis of the cuisine is Austrian, which does not prevent the appearance of nicoise salad, tuna tataki, hummus and risotto on the menu. The wine list focuses on local wines. Open from Monday to Friday from 11.30, on Saturday from 17.00.

Chef Mario Bertanovich's modern hipster restaurant is located a few steps from Maria Theresa Square and is open from morning until late at night. For breakfast, those who are tired of the eternal Viennese boiled eggs take rosti with salmon and one of the best coffee in Vienna, for dinner - a modern version of the Viennese schnitzel with potato salad. In addition, Kussmaul is famous for interesting liqueurs like port on onions and a good bar list. In a word, Bertanovich, who headed the kitchen of the cult Motto am Fluss for several years, knows how to attract a young, advanced audience.

A charming cafe in the second district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt, became famous throughout the city for its breakfasts of the peoples of the world, among which the Georgian breakfast occupies an honorable place. Nina Ansari, the owner of the cafe, is Georgian by origin. The soul does not lie to Georgian cuisine in exile? Take an Oriental breakfast with pita and hummus or a traditional Viennese breakfast. From here, from Ansari, a pleasant route through non-tourist Vienna, described by me, begins. From Monday to Saturday, the cafe is open from 8.00 to 23.00, on Sunday - from 9.00 to 15.00.

Tian is not the most popular, but no less interesting genre - it is a vegetarian restaurant with a Michelin star. Located across the street from the historic Ronacher Theater (now its repertoire is mainly musicals); the products used in the kitchen are grown in the greenhouses and the garden of the restaurant. The restaurant is open at lunchtime and in the evening, closed on Sunday, many dishes can be completely vegan, i.e. containing no products of animal origin.

The city's best Persian restaurant, plastered all over with badges from the reputable Falstaff restaurant guide, is located halfway from the Brunnenmarkt market, which has a clear Middle Eastern accent, to the city center. The establishment is family run, the interior is a bit shabby and unfashionable; the menu includes many types of kebabs, hummus, dolma, paneer and classics of Persian cuisine. Pay attention to cute ceramic dishes - if you are inspired, check out the nearby shop for shopping.

Around the Naschmarkt

A lively Asian bistro, On Market, is located nearby and is open from morning until late at night. The institution is headed by well-known Austrian TV chef Simon Xi Hong, who focuses on the cuisine of South China and Japan. Mornings start here with one of several breakfast options (how about Chinese medicine-approved dishes?), and in the afternoon there is a special menu - tempura with asparagus and smoked tofu, duck noodles or assorted sushi do not cost more than 11 euros; in the evening the bistro turns into a popular cocktail bar.

Nautilus, which is in the Naschmarkt market, is the main oyster in the city. It is them, accompanied by a glass of simple Austrian white wine, that are so pleasant to taste in the bustle of the most popular city market. Here they cook in every way different types fish - they will bake at least a whole branzino, at least they will serve tuna tartar.

A delightful Middle Eastern contemporary cafe in the same Naschmarkt market, Neni is named after the sons of energetic blonde owner Khaya, Nuriel, Elior, Nadiv and Ilan. The institution opened in 2010, since then it has become a legend of the main Viennese market and managed to acquire branches in Berlin, Hamburg and Zurich. Open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 11 pm, so nothing can imagine you anywhere in Tel Aviv ordering an Israeli breakfast in the morning and popping in for a cocktail or a glass of wine in the evening. If you want to immerse yourself in cooking and the whole atmosphere, you can book one of the culinary lessons and spend the day in the company of the owner of the cafe.
